Essential Nutritional Support for Young, Sick and Recovering Birds
Give vulnerable birds the nutritional support they need with Harrison's Recovery Organic Hand-Feeding Bird Food Formula, a specially developed, easily digestible diet designed for newly hatched chicks, sick or injured birds and animals recovering from illness or surgery. This certified organic formula provides concentrated, readily assimilated nutrients to help support energy requirements, healthy development and nutritional recovery when conventional feeding is difficult or unsuitable. Ideal for professional avian care, rehabilitation and experienced hand-rearing, it offers a practical feeding solution during some of the most demanding stages of a bird's life.
- Specialised Recovery Nutrition: Provides an easily assimilated source of essential nutrients for sick, injured or debilitated birds, helping meet their nutritional requirements during veterinary-supervised recovery and rehabilitation.
- Suitable for Newly Hatched Chicks: Formulated for hand-feeding from the earliest days of life, supplying protein, energy and important minerals to support growth, feather development and healthy bone formation.
- Certified Organic Ingredients: Made with carefully selected ingredients, including organic soy protein isolate, sunflower oil and lecithin, providing a dependable nutritional foundation without relying on conventional seed-based feeding.
- Versatile Hand-Feeding Formula: Mixes with warm water to create a smooth, adjustable consistency suitable for professional crop tube-feeding and other veterinary-recommended feeding methods, making it useful across different species and care requirements.
Harrison's Recovery Organic Hand-Feeding Bird Food Formula has been developed for situations where easily digestible nutrition is particularly important. Its low-fibre composition makes it suitable for animals requiring a readily assimilated source of nutrients, including selected medical and surgical patients once oral feeding has been deemed appropriate. It can also provide nutritional support for birds recovering from prolonged poor appetite or transitioning away from a seed-based diet. However, this formula is not suitable for animals experiencing gastrointestinal ileus or stasis. Sick or injured birds should always be assessed by an avian veterinary professional before assisted feeding begins.
At the heart of this specialist bird recovery food is a carefully balanced combination of protein, fats and minerals. Soy protein isolate supplies concentrated protein and amino acids needed for tissue maintenance and development, while sunflower oil provides dietary energy. Calcium carbonate and monocalcium phosphate contribute minerals important for developing bones, particularly in rapidly growing chicks. Potassium chloride supplies potassium, while DL-methionine provides an essential amino acid involved in protein synthesis. Lecithin helps support the formulation's consistency, allowing the ingredients to blend into a smooth feeding mixture. Together, these components create a specialised nutritional profile for birds with demanding feeding requirements.
Unlike conventional parrot pellets, seed mixes or treats, Harrison's Recovery Formula is designed to be prepared as a smooth, moist feeding mixture. Its fine powdered texture allows it to combine with warm water, producing a consistency that can be adjusted according to the animal's needs and the feeding method recommended by a veterinary professional. This makes it particularly useful for young chicks that cannot yet feed independently and recovering birds requiring assisted nutritional support. Rather than relying on flavour to encourage voluntary eating, the formula prioritises nutritional availability, digestibility and practical administration.
Harrison's Recovery Organic Hand-Feeding Bird Food Formula can be used for newborn psittacines, doves and pigeons during their earliest feeding stages. Cockatiels may have different nutritional requirements because of their rapid growth and feather development, so their feeding programme should follow species-specific guidance. The formula is also suitable for certain finches, passerines and small insectivorous birds that have difficulty digesting cornstarch. Feeding frequency, quantity and consistency must always be adapted to the individual bird's age, species, weight and clinical condition.
For safe preparation, mix a fresh portion immediately before every feeding using clean utensils and suitable drinking water. The dry powder should be stored securely in its original packaging, tightly sealed and protected from moisture, excessive heat and contamination. Always follow the manufacturer's storage instructions and observe the product's expiry date. For birds that can drink independently, ensure fresh, clean drinking water remains available at all times. Assisted feeding should only be carried out by appropriately trained individuals, as incorrect technique or temperature can cause serious injury, aspiration or crop damage.
Whether caring for newly hatched chicks, supporting an injured parrot or managing nutritional rehabilitation under veterinary guidance, Harrison's Recovery Organic Hand-Feeding Bird Food provides a specialist feeding solution when dependable nutrition matters most. With certified organic ingredients, concentrated nutritional support and a versatile powdered format, it is a valuable addition to professional avian care and experienced hand-rearing programmes. Choose Harrison's Recovery Formula to help provide the nutritional foundation vulnerable birds need during growth, rehabilitation and recovery.
Composition
- Organic soy protein isolate, Organic sunflower oil, Organic sugar, Calcium carbonate, Potassium chloride, Monocalcium phosphate, Organic lecithin, DL-Methionine.
Directions for use
Important: Hand-feeding and crop tube-feeding require appropriate training. Inexperienced carers must seek professional assistance to prevent aspiration, burns, crop injuries or other complications.
- Step 1 - Check the crop: Gently assess the bird's crop before feeding to ensure it is almost empty. Do not feed if abnormal crop emptying is suspected without veterinary advice.
- Step 2 - Prepare fresh formula: Mix 1 part dry Recovery Formula with 3 parts suitable drinking water warmed to approximately 39°C (103°F). Adjust the consistency if required, using up to a 1:1 powder-to-water ratio only when appropriate for the feeding method and individual bird.
- Step 3 - Check the temperature: Allow the mixture to cool to a safe, lukewarm feeding temperature. Check carefully before administration. Never microwave the formula.
- Step 4 - Feed carefully: Administer using an appropriate technique under professional guidance. Crop tube-feeding should only be performed by trained individuals using suitable equipment.
- Step 5 - Monitor crop filling: The manufacturer's guidance describes feeding until the crop is approximately three-quarters full. The actual feeding volume must be determined according to the bird's individual requirements and professional advice.
- Step 6 - Clean thoroughly: Remove any excess formula from the bird's beak, feathers and enclosure after feeding. Clean and disinfect feeding equipment appropriately.
- Feeding frequency: Repeat as required according to species, age, crop emptying, body weight and veterinary recommendations. Monitor body weight regularly.
- For psittacines, doves and pigeons: Recovery Formula is generally used during days 0-7. From day 8, gradually replace Recovery Formula with the appropriate Juvenile Formula, aiming for a complete transition by day 21 where recommended.
- For cockatiels: Follow the manufacturer's species-specific feeding guidance, as their rapid growth and nutritional requirements may require a different transition schedule.
- For finches, passerines and small insectivorous birds: May be suitable from hatching to fledging for species with an apparent inability to digest cornstarch, following specialist guidance.
- For other animals: Mix 1 part dry formula with 2-3 parts warmed drinking water, or adjust to the consistency recommended by a veterinary professional. Administer by an appropriate veterinary-approved feeding method.
- Freshness: Prepare a new batch for every feeding. Never reuse, reheat or microwave previously mixed formula.
- Storage: Keep the dry formula tightly sealed in a cool, dry place, away from moisture and direct sunlight. Follow the storage instructions printed on the packaging.
- Veterinary guidance: This is a specialist nutritional formula, not a treatment for the underlying cause of illness. Do not use in cases of gastrointestinal ileus or stasis. Always consult an avian vet for sick, injured or debilitated birds.
